When did you realize filing for bankruptcy was your best option? 

Personally, I made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy when I was so far down a financial hole that I just didn’t see any other way out. I had made some bad decisions but also had some bad luck along the way. I found myself up to my eyeballs in credit card and medical debt. Paying it down would take forever and I felt like I had no truly good options. Bankruptcy gave me a newfound financial hope when nothing else could.

In what ways was it beneficial for you to file for bankruptcy?

Without question the biggest benefit I got from filing for bankruptcy was TIME. Bankruptcy saved me decades of financial struggle. I was able to quickly move on and start over financially. Seeking debt relief through bankruptcy allowed me to quickly recover from monetary burdens I would have literally been trapped with for the rest of my life. It was a clean slate that reset the clock on my financial freedom. And that is priceless.

Did your personal experience inspire you to become a bankruptcy attorney?

Absolutely. I was amazed at the benefits I was able to experience thanks to bankruptcy. I decided that I was going to dedicate my professional life to helping others get the same financial relief and fresh start that I had gotten.

What is the most fulfilling part of being a bankruptcy attorney?

Having the ability to help people move forward with their lives is extremely fulfilling. When people hire me as their bankruptcy attorney, they are in a very difficult and vulnerable situation. To have someone entrust you with their future is a big responsibility, which I do not take lightly. At the end of the day, my career allows me to help people have a new beginning. To write the script for a better ending. Not many people can say that about their jobs. 

How has experiencing filing for bankruptcy firsthand helped you to be a better bankruptcy attorney?

Having been in their shoes, I maintain a sense of humility and compassion that is appreciated by clients. My ability to empathize with them allows me to do my job better. At the same time, one of the main reasons I excel at my job is that I have a firsthand understanding of the bankruptcy system from many levels.
